Weekend Warriors: A Whiskey Creek Kayaking Adventure!

Weekend Warriors: A Whiskey Creek Kayaking Adventure!

Let me tell you about one of our absolute favorite spots – Whiskey Creek! It’s just so perfect for a family adventure. There always seems to be something new to discover every time we visit. Some families have their go-to brunch spots, we have our go-to kayaking creek! And trust me, this beats waiting in line for mediocre pancakes any day of the week (truly excellent pancakes, however, I can get behind!)

Here’s a little weekend warrior secret – timing is everything! We’ve learned that hitting the creek early on Saturday mornings is pure magic. The parking lot isn’t packed yet, the water is calm, and there’s this peaceful morning vibe that makes everything feel extra special. Plus, it gives us the whole day to explore!

Pro tip on executing a successful kayaking (or really any) adventure: bring snacks, LOTS of snacks.

Sometimes you just get lucky, and this was one of those magical times. The water was crystal clear (I mean, seriously, you could see straight to the bottom!), and the morning sun was just starting to warm up the mangroves.

Even though we’ve been here countless times, the wildlife never disappoints. Today it was puffer fish that had Eli totally mesmerized – he counted every single one! (And hey, who says math and science can’t happen on weekends?) I am a big believer that the best kind of learning happens when kids don’t even realize they’re doing it! Some of our best “school” moments happen right here on these weekend adventures. The twins learn more from tallying up the wildlife they’ve spotted, understanding tides, and exploring mangrove ecosystems than they ever would from sitting at a desk. That’s the beauty of this life we’ve chosen – learning doesn’t have to feel like learning, and it definitely doesn’t have to happen Monday through Friday!

But wait, it gets better! We paddled into this amazing mangrove tunnel (okay, full disclosure: we did get stuck and have to execute a tricky kayak three-point turn, but hey – that’s part of the adventure, right?!), and it was like entering another world. We were all mesmerized by the mangrove roots. “They look like octopus tentacles!”

And the birds! Pelicans diving for fish right next to us, herons stalking through the shallows, and these tiny little fiddler crabs that had the twins cracking up with their sideways gait.

Did we get messy? Um, is water wet?! We were covered in mud, salt water, and who knows what else by the end. But that’s what learning should be, right? Messy, chaotic, and absolutely unforgettable!

By the time we got home, we were exhausted but full of ideas. The twins couldn’t stop talking about everything we’d seen. They wanted to research why the creek is called Whiskey Creek (there’s actually an interesting story there!), figure out big puffer fish can puff, and learn as much as possible about mangroves. I mean, when your kids are actually BEGGING to do research, you know you’ve done something right!

So here’s my advice if you’re thinking about taking your kiddos to Whiskey Creek: DO IT! Just remember to pack smart:

Let’s talk sun and bug protection because it is Florida after all! I swear by this combo:

  • Sun Bum Mist 45 (super easy to reapply on the whole family)
  • Aveeno Baby SPF 50 for sensitive skin
  • Cutter Skinsations insect repellent (with aloe and vitamin E – your skin will thank you)

For food, keep it simple but filling:

  • Wraps and sandwiches (nothing that can melt or that will spoil quickly)
  • Fruit that can take a beating (we brought apples and oranges)
  • Beef jerky (perfect protein-filled snack after swimming)

And don’t forget:

  • LOTS of water (seriously, pack more than you think you need)
  • A dry bag or even just ziplock bags for phones/cameras
  • Check those tides! (Unless you feel like dragging your kayaks through shallow water)
  • After-sun soother! We love Burt’s Bees Aloe & Coconut Oil After Sun

Time-wise, plan for:

  • At least 2 hours for paddling
  • 1-2 hours for creek-side swimming and playing
  • Extra time if you want to check out the beach side (just check conditions first – we couldn’t swim due to dangerous rip currents)

I can’t help but think about how different this is from traditional school. While other kids might sit at desks learning about marine ecosystems from pictures in a book, my boys are able to be out there LIVING it. They were touching, seeing, experiencing everything firsthand. The best part? Everyone found their own little slice of joy. Archer couldn’t get enough of running down the sand into the creek and splashing in the water (I mean, what’s better than that kind of pure joy and happiness?). Eli was absolutely fascinated by all the fish. And Dad of Twins (DoT for short)? He was in his element exploring parts of the mangrove we could only reach because the tide was just right. He will always find the most magical hidden spots!

And yes, maybe we didn’t follow a strict lesson plan, and maybe we got sidetracked about sixteen (hundred) times, but isn’t that exactly what learning should be? Those unplanned moments – discovering a new mangrove path – that’s where the real magic happens.

Anyone else been to Whiskey Creek with their littles? Did you see any manatees? Tell me all about it in the comments!
