Summer Bucket List Reality Check: When Blowing Rocks Surprises You
Adventure Plans Change and Why That’s Actually Perfect
We went to Blowing Rocks Preserve with one clear mission: check “Wade in tide pools and identify 3 sea creatures” off our summer bucket list. I had it all planned out – the boys would explore shallow pools, we’d use our nets to catch and magnifying glasses to identify marine life, and of course I’d capture those perfect educational moments for our homeschool portfolio.
Plot twist: Mother Nature had completely different plans.

The Discovery: I have never been to a Florida beach like this – completely unique
When we arrived at Blowing Rocks Preserve, the first thing that struck me was how different this coastline looked from every other Florida beach we’d ever visited. Instead of endless stretches of sand, we found dramatic limestone formations jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, creating one of the most unique geological landscapes I’ve ever seen in our state.
The boys’ first reaction? “Mommy, this doesn’t look like a regular beach!”
They were absolutely right.

Blowing Rocks Preserve isn’t your typical Florida beach experience. This 73-acre preserve protects one of the largest nearshore reef formations on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The “blowing rocks” themselves are Anastasia limestone formations that create spectacular displays when waves crash through holes and crevices in the rock.

Even without tide pools, we discovered incredible learning opportunities:

Here’s something I need to share honestly with other families planning to visit: If your kids are not yet strong swimmers, this might not be the beach for you, yet!
Why the swimming skill requirement matters:
- Rocky surfaces instead of gradual sandy slopes
- Deeper water close to shore due to the reef structure
- Wave action that can be unpredictable around the limestone formations
- No lifeguards – this is a preserve, not a typical beach
This isn’t meant to discourage families from visiting – it’s meant to help you plan appropriately.

Standing there watching my boys explore these unique limestone formations, I realized something important about family adventures: the goal isn’t always the point!

The teaching moment: Sometimes the most valuable learning happens when we stay flexible and follow our curiosity instead of rigidly sticking to predetermined plans and getting disappointed when those plans don’t pan out.
The Dunkin’ Discovery That Started the Day Right!
Before heading to Blowing Rocks, we stopped for a coffee run (because let’s be real – mom needs caffeine for any family adventure). The boys spotted special Dunkin’ beach buckets and asked if we could get them. Beach toy + 50 munchkins = easy yes!
Mom brain calculation: $16 for treats + a practical beach bucket = genius product & simple decision
That little orange bucket became the star of our morning. It organized our exploration supplies, collected interesting rocks and shells, not to mention served us the perfect long drive snack. Sometimes the best family adventure accessories come from the most unexpected places!

The limestone formations at Blowing Rocks tell the story of Florida’s ancient past. These rocks formed from compressed shells and coral over millions of years, creating the foundation for what would become one of Florida’s most unique coastal preserves.
