17 Apr Flamingo Gardens Davie: A South Florida Field Trip the Whole Crew Will Love
Some field trips you plan for weeks. Some you just show up to with your homeschool crew and end up having the best day! Flamingo Gardens in Davie? Definitely the second one.
If you’re looking for something that isn’t another beach day or playground, somewhere that feels like a genuine adventure, this is it. Sixty acres of tropical botanical gardens, rescued Florida wildlife, and a narrated tram tour through native jungle you didn’t know existed 20 minutes from your house.

What’s inside

Flamingo Gardens is part botanical garden, part wildlife sanctuary, part living classroom, and all of it is included in one ticket. You’ll find over 3,000 species of rare and exotic plants, 23 Florida Forest Service-designated Champion trees (including the largest single-trunk tree in the state), and a wildlife sanctuary home to permanently injured and non-releasable Florida animals.
That means alligators, otters, bobcats, panthers, eagles, peacocks, and of course, flamingos. Real ones. Close enough to actually see their details.
The narrated tram tour winds through 42 acres of tropical rainforest and wetlands and is genuinely one of the best 30 minutes you’ll spend on a field trip in South Florida. The kids are always locked in the entire time.
The homeschool angle (because there’s always one)
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of homeschooling: you don’t have to plan the lesson. Just show up somewhere amazing and let curiosity do the rest.
Flamingo Gardens is the kind of place that asks questions for you. Why are flamingos pink? Why can’t that eagle be released? What’s a Champion tree? How do otters live in Florida? We didn’t get through half of them on the drive home… and that’s exactly the point.
Naturally connects to Florida ecosystems, native wildlife, conservation, botany, and Everglades history. Or you just let the kids ride the tram three times and call it a win. Both are valid.
