29 Sep Cultivate Climbing Asheville Review: Boys’ First Time Bouldering
We stumbled on Cultivate Climbing while visiting the Marquee in Asheville’s River Arts District and the boys immediately asked if we could go. I told them we’d come back on one of our rest days, and we did!
A homeschool rest day done right
We did our schoolwork in the morning, then spent the afternoon climbing. Since a day pass covers the entire day, this would be a great place to bring school with you: climb, take a break to get some work done, then climb again. It’s PE and a field trip in one.
What it’s like

The Foundy Street location is a bouldering gym, which means no ropes or harnesses. You climb shorter walls over thick padded floors. The walls are colorful, the space is huge, and the staff were super friendly from the moment we walked in.
How the boys did

Honestly, the walls here are pretty advanced, and this was the boys’ first time trying anything like it. They didn’t make it up every route, but they had a blast trying and made it all the way to the top on 3-4 of them! They were SO proud of themselves, and that confidence boost was worth the trip on its own.
Practical info
- Day passes: $18 for kids, $25 for adults, good for the whole day
- Climbing shoes: $5 to rent
- Parking: free
- How long we stayed: a few hours, easy
- Supervision: kids need a parent watching, so plan to stay close
Would we go back?

Definitely, if we were local. If you’re visiting Asheville with kids, especially on a rainy day or a rest day between hikes, Cultivate Climbing is worth adding to your list.
