Learning Is Messy, Embrace It! About Our Homeschool Journey
I did not know that I would end up being a homeschool mom. Like, didn’t cross my mind, ever. When I pictured having kids (then we got twins, surprise!), I imagined the typical first-day-of-school photos, cute little backpacks, and tearful kindergarten drop-offs. But, as we all know, life has this funny way of taking your perfect plans and turning them into something completely different – and in this case, way better than I could have imagined.
So here we are, my six-year-old twin boys and me, embarking on this wild homeschool adventure together. And a very important fact, it’s nothing like what most people picture when they hear “homeschool.” There are no perfectly organized school rooms with Instagram-worthy decorations (I do dream of these though!). No strict schedules that we follow to the minute(also a dream of mine!). And definitely no sitting at desks for hours on end (this one is more of a nightmare).
Instead, our version of homeschool looks like this: One kid decides that he really wants to bake cookies, so we learn fractions while we bake at 10 AM on a Tuesday, because why not? Easy yes. It’s my other son discovering physics by building increasingly elaborate marble runs (and yes, sometimes marbles end up in places and are not found until weeks later). It’s both kids learning about different cultures by chatting with locals at off-season destinations, because traveling during school hours is actually amazing.
Let me back up just a little bit though to how our homeschool journey started – during those surreal, scary days of COVID lockdown. There we were, stuck at home with just turned two-year-old twins, desperately searching for ways to keep their curious minds engaged. Endless hours on google led me to discover the wealth of resources for teaching kids at home, a-ha! Watching them learn and grow through everyday moments, I had this revelation: “I could do that.” And you know what? That’s all it took. It wasn’t a carefully planned decision or a philosophical stance – it was just a mom with toddlers, some internet resources, and a growing realization that this felt right. From that moment on, there was no looking back.
I started to realize that education doesn’t have to look the way we’ve always been told it should. Maybe it can be messy – in fact, it probably should be messy. Learning Is Messy, Embrace It! Learning can be spontaneous. It can happen anywhere and everywhere.
And that’s what this blog is about. It’s about embracing the chaos that comes with learning through living. It’s about finding educational opportunities in unexpected places. It’s about showing that homeschooling doesn’t have to fit into any particular stereotype.
Will there be days when everything goes perfectly according to plan? Probably not ever. Will there be times when I question this whole journey? Absolutely (at least once a day). But will there be moments of pure magic when my kids’ eyes light up with understanding and excitement? Those moments are magic and that magic makes it all worth it.
So welcome to our messy little homeschool. Here you’ll find real stories about real learning – the successes, the failures, and everything in between. You’ll see how we turn everyday moments into opportunities for discovery, how we learn through travel, and how we sometimes (often) wing it because that’s just how life goes.
If you’re looking for perfect Instagram-worthy homeschool setups or rigid scheduling advice, maybe look elsewhere and then send me the link, I’m always looking for ideas! But if you’re interested in seeing how education can happen naturally, organically, and yes, messily – stick around. We’re just getting started, and we’d love to have you along for the ride.
P.S. As I write this, we’re on our second attempt at growing apple seeds in a mini greenhouse on my kitchen counter… in the middle of South Florida’s tropical heat. The kitchen has become a jumble of damp paper towels, plastic baggies, carefully labeled containers, and daily observation journal pages (complete with water spots and soil smudges). Do I know that this probably will not work? Yep. Did we learn our lesson when our first attempt didn’t make it? Nope. Are we trying again anyway, optimistically and with a counter that looks like a science lab exploded? Sure are! Because that’s exactly the point – Learning Is Messy, Embrace It! That’s how we operate here at Messy Little Homeschool. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
